Background

SDMRI Journey

Established in April 1998 under the Suganthi Devadason Trust (Reg.No. 290/1997),Suganthi Devadason Marine Research Institute (SDMRI) is the first institution in the non-Governmental sector in India to offer Research and Higher Education in the discipline of Marine Science. The Founder President of SDMRI Mr. D.G. Rajan is an industrialist, administrator and social worker, serving the society in various capacities.

SDMRI Has The Following Key Objectives

To identify and fulfill the research needs of marine and coastal ecosystems in India.

To encourage and enhance societal involvement in marine resource conservation.

To promote higher education in marine science.

To assist the coastal communities in improving their social conditions and alleviating their economic hardships.

Though the coastal and marine ecosystems of Tamil Nadu are our major focus, studies are also being conducted in other states in India.

Accreditations

  • Recognized by Manonmaniam Sundaranar University of Government of Tamil Nadu as "Research Centre for Marine Science" leading to Ph.D. programme.
  • Recognized by University Grants Commission (UGC) of Government of India.
  • Identified Institution by the Government of India for Environmental Monitoring of the Sethusamudram Ship Canal Project (SSCP).
  • Identified Institution by the Tamil Nadu State Coastal Zone Management Authority for Coastal Baseline Studies and Monitoring including Marine Water and Sediment Quality, Heavy Metals in Organisms, Fish Catch, Underwater Survey and Monitoring of Corals, Seagrass Beds and Associated Fauna and Flora and Fish Population.
  • Recognized by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Government of India, as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organization.
