Coral Diseases

  • Disease is a rising problem on coral reefs worldwide. Disease outbreaks not only reduce coral cover but also can cause significant changes in community structure, species diversity and abundance of reef associated organisms.
  • The coral disease study has been conducted since 2007 in Gulf of Mannar and since 2008 in Palk Bay. The types of coral diseases, frequency of occurrence, corals affected, disease spreading ratio and factors responsible for causing diseases are being studied.
  • In Gulf of Mannar, nine different coral diseases (white band, white plaque, white spot, pink spot, black spot, black band, yellow spot, yellow band and tumors) are prevalent and in Palk Bay, five coral disease types (black band, white band, yellow band, pink spot and white plague) are observed.
